The Community Development department's duty is to protect the public welfare, health, safety, and property values through the promotion, application, and enforcement of adopted building and zoning codes.

Apply for a Permit

Permits

Permits may be required for structural additions, deletions, electrical, plumbing and mechanical changes. Some examples are roof replacements, a new panel box, new bathroom, and HVAC changes.

Starting Monday, October 28, 2024, all permits, licenses, and planning projects must be submitted through the City of Belton's new online eTRAKiT portal. This new site will allow users to submit applications, schedule inspections, and track internal review and scheduling through their dashboard. This new system will help streamline the permit, project, and license submittal, review, approval, and inspection processes. Additionally, an improved and expanded online payment system will accompany this new site. Please see the following guides for assistance:

Permit Fees

Permit fees are primarily based on the value of the project and are calculated in accordance with the fee schedule(PDF, 1MB) located in the Unified Development Code.

How to Schedule a Building Inspection

The City has instituted a policy of next-day scheduling for building inspections. Scheduling by 4:30 p.m. means your requested inspection will be scheduled for the following business day. Inspections received after 4:30 p.m. will try to be accommodated, but not guaranteed.

Adopted Codes

On September 27, 2022, the City Council approved the adoption of the 2018 International Building and Fire Codes and 2017 National Electrical Code, effective January 1, 2023. The currently adopted 2012 International Building and Fire Codes and 2011 National Electrical Code may be utilized until December 31, 2022, after which all new permit applications must comply with the newly adopted codes.
