Claire Canaan started Monday (9/9/2024) as the City's new Director of Emergency Management, bringing nearly 15 years of experience in public service, including law enforcement and emergency management. In her new role, Claire oversees the city's emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation efforts. Her work involves developing emergency plans, training first responders, managing public information, and coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure Belton is ready for any disaster.

Claire's passion for public service comes from a deep commitment to helping people during challenging times. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, staying active, and finding time to recharge through reading and outdoor activities.

One lesser-known aspect of her job is that emergency management extends beyond major disasters. Claire also ensures public safety at local events, such as parades and festivals, and supports first responders in managing the psychological toll of their work.

Her favorite project? Coordinating a week-long emergency management training for 74 city and county partners at the Emergency Management Institute in Maryland—a rewarding experience that strengthened the community.

Claire’s favorite movie is The Sandlot, which she loves for its nostalgic reminder to cherish the simple moments in life. If she could have any superpower, it would be time travel, offering endless opportunities for discovery and connection.

If you see Claire, make sure to give her a big Belton welcome as she works to keep the community safe!
