Belton, Missouri – Dec. 15, 2017– The City of Belton, Missouri, along with the City of Grandview and the Missouri Department of Transportation, celebrated the opening of a new diverging diamond interchange and roundabout at Interstate 49 and 155th Street interchange on Friday, Dec. 15.
MoDOT completed reconstructing the 155th St. interchange in December 2017 with an innovative solution that will handle a larger volume of traffic, enhance the area for anticipated new development, while accommodating existing traffic in both Belton, Grandview and Kansas City. The design is called a diverge-about. It includes a diverging diamond and a roundabout. It is the first of its kind in the state of Missouri. In addition to providing smoother, more efficient traffic flow to this growing area, MoDOT constructed a dedicated shared use path for all non-motorized vehicles and pedestrian traffic.
The 155th Street interchange is the first completed project in the state of Missouri to combine a diverging diamond interchange with a roundabout to handle large volumes of traffic.
“This interchange will enhance public safety by reducing traffic congestion and accidents,” said Belton Mayor Jeff Davis. “The City also anticipates an economic benefit as Belton works diligently to attract companies in the transportation, manufacturing and e-commerce industries. These improvements create a critical direct linkage to Markey Business Park and our North Scott redevelopment area and will assist the city in ongoing economic development attraction activity.”
The interchange offers a key sustainable connection for Belton thanks to the addition of a dedicated shared use path for all bicycle and pedestrian traffic. The ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony was held in the roundabout on 155th Street.
